Claudio, First of all, Happy New Year! I've noticed that where you've opened up the deck for fitting the rudder servo there appears to be a hole between the edge of the deck and servo - how do you intend to fill & make water proof? Also, from a weight saving point of view I can see the benefits of bonding the servos into place but in terms of servo reliability and perhaps the need to replace them at some point, surely this will involve fairly major surgery to gain access to enable removal - in particular the rudder servo. I guess years of experience maintaining big boats where the manufacturers paid no head to ongoing service & access have given me a mindset where anything that may need replacement should be accessible with the minimum number of hand tools..... I'm always reminded in this instance of a friends boat, a Hans Christian 41, which required major osmosis treatment (not just replacement of gel coat, but several layers of glass fibre as well) where it was discovered that some of the skin fittings were totally inaccessible without removing things like a water maker or an aircon unit! Food for thought if nothing else... Regards, Row
Rudder servos aren't under much stress, so failure isn't a frequent issue. On the other hand, when I bonded one in my original Cobra, it failed in the middle of the first Euro GP in Birkenhead! Since my boat was balsa, I was able (with help from my friend Flavio) to cut out the offending servo, glue in a new one, and get back in the race within the 5 minute hold period. It wasn't pretty, but it worked for the rest of the weekend. I've never had another rudder servo fail...but I haven't glued another one in like that either The boat looks great, Claudio...thanks for sharing your build with us. Bill
Hi Row, Happy New Year to You too. Yes, you are right, if the servo rudder fail I shall cut the shadow and for the servo arm I shall cut the foam. Is not a big problem for me considering the prototype aspects. It already happened this morning when I cut a window on the front shadow to allow the arm turning. All these arrangements will offer a good starting point to imagine different setting as already drawn at the beginning of this tread. I was to lazy building mounting plate/box. BTW, considering finish work, sails and paint, the overall weight is out by 15g-20g Cheers Claudio
The servo setting completed. I got some troubles with hull painting. Probably due to wax residues in spite of acetone washing, etc. It was necessary to apply several under coat layers. Now waiting full dry process before wet sanding. Ready to start building the sails and complete the Rig construction ClaudioD
Claudio, So, let me get this straight, as well as all the work on 'Esterel Footy' it appears that you've also found time to construct another sail block!! If this is the case, have you used a specific profile? She's really going to get wet very soon - congratulations!! Regards, Row
Hi Row, The block you have seen is very old and used in the past for RG65 Jib. I recovered also the block used for RG65 and AC100. The profile is obtained with a "chosen" section of an elliptical form as depicted in the sketch. No NACA profiles used. Cheers Claudio
